Soldier injured in training exercise dies from his injuries in Georgia

Sgt. Michael T. Trask, 31, an infantryman from Olalla, Wash., died Tuesday from injuries he sustained during a live fire training exercise at Fort Stewart last week.

The soldier who was critically wounded in a live fire training exercise at Fort Stewart last week has died from his injuries at a Savannah hospital.

The military identified him as Sgt. Michael T. Trask, 31, an infantryman from Olalla, Wash., who was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division. Trask, who is survived by his wife, died Tuesday. Posthumously promoted to sergeant, his awards include the Afghanistan and Iraq campaign medals, Combat Infantryman Badge and Army Commendation Medal.

"Trask was an outstanding Soldier that helped his unit sharpen their skills with every training event," said Lt. Col. Justin Harper, Trask's battalion commander. "His experience and personal example were instrumental in developing his unit into a cohesive team."

Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said he could not provide additional details about the incident, citing the military’s continuing investigation.
