Roswell's library was already being upgraded, but after a Fulton County Board of Commissioners' vote, it will get even more improvements, including a raised roof.

As part of $275 million that was approved to upgrade libraries in Fulton County, the Roswell library was already getting a facelift.

But after a meeting last week, leaders in the county approved more improvements for Roswell’s library at 115 Norcross Street. The board of commissioners approved an option that will remove and replace the building’s main roof and raise the roof’s height, which will accommodate a new hall and entry doors.

“Roswell community leaders have made clear that they believe renovations to their library, which rests in the historic district, could transform the building into a welcoming community center and enhance the entire downtown area,” Fulton County District 1 Commissioner Liz Hausmann said in a statement.

The work involved in the project will now include adding a concrete sidewalk from Norcross Street to the building, creating a porch seating area on each side of the entrance and new landscaping.

Roswell's library closed for initial renovations on Aug. 21 and is expected to reopen in February 2019. As part of countywide improvements to libraries, Roswell was already slated to get upgrades to its HVAC and emergency systems, new technology, a fresh layout, new shelving, updated bathrooms, new lighting and expanded rooms.

“The library building program is giving communities an opportunity to rethink the possibilities for facilities that are not just libraries, but important parts of their communities,” Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts said in a statement.
