Gainesville police were called to the scene about 11 a.m. after a report of a man “at the office waving a gun,” the GBI said.

Officers entered the business in the 600 block of South Enota Drive and cleared some staff members.

“When officers encountered the man, he had hostages in an office at gunpoint,” the GBI said.

The GBI did not say what led to the hostage situation.

Hamilton was shot by an officer after he ignored “verbal commands,” officials said.

He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

It is the fifth officer-involved shooting the GBI has investigated in 2019.
